After Google’s announcement of possibly pulling the search engine giant from China on the 12th of Jan following sophisticated attempted hacks, copycat sites have emerged in China. Introducing Goojje – Google’s ‘little sister’.

Goojje is a play on words, sounding like sister while ‘Google’ in maderin sounds very much like big brother. The creators of Goojje even left a message on their front page roughly translated as “Sister was very happy when brother gave up the thought of leaving and stayed for sister”. Many are interpiting this as a mockery of Google potentially pulling out of China while others believe it is a plea for Google to stay.

Goojje Home- page suspiciously similar to Google

It is very clear that the site has modeled itself off the searching giant from the style of layout to the Google font and colours. There is even a small nod to Baidu with the paw print in its logo. The search engine returns many of the same results of Google but only ‘clean’ government approved websites. It is well known that the Chinese government has implemented filters on the country’s internet access dubbed as The Great Firewall of China, with any content that is deemed ‘undesirable’ blocked out. This includes many foreign sites such as the BBC news site.

The Google owned Youtube was also reproducted with a Chinese makeover. A variation of Youtube called Youtubecn popped up not long after Goojje showing videos that are usually blocked on the Youtube’s site. Although its slow and often described as glichy, Youtbecn is gaining alot of momentum.

Google refused to make any comment on Goojje or other copycat sites.

Search engine optimisation is a way of getting your site to rank highly on search engines by choosing words and phrases that best relate to your website. As users search these terms it is a sure fire way to display your website at the top. By making changes to your meta tags and HTML, the quality of searches can be improved greatly. Its widely known that the top search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Ask Jeeves like to keep their search algorithms and strategies a secret to stop spam sites from clogging up their searches and still claim credit for the highest search results.

SEO algorithms are very complex, meaning, for example that a website could be ranked 600th on Google and 1st on AOL. There’s often no need to submit a new site to a search engine as a cleverly placed link to an existing site will do the trick, connecting all the content together on the search engine. From then it takes a few days for all the new sites to be indexed. Now it is imperative that research is carried out to find the best search phrases and keywords to improve your search engine ranking. This is usually time consuming for business’, who are now choosing to seek additional help for this kind of promotion and marketing. A kind of a consultation service to help improve the design and traffic of their site

123 Ranking is one of those that business’ are turning to guarantee their top ten position in search engines. SEO with a difference they are defiantly one to be looked up.

Keyword research is one of the first steps most people take when optimising a website in any niche. This research allows you to find out keywords that people search for that relate to the site you want to promote.

Using various tools can help you find more keywords to target. You can often find some great little gems that you wouldn’t usually think of that really are worth adding to your campaign. But with so many out there that all claim to have the most accurate information it’s difficult to finally settle on a list of keywords to use for your SEO campaign. So how can you be sure you’re targeting the right keywords?

You can always go for the obvious Google Adwords Keyword Tool to find your keywords. This is a free resource from Google and can help you find some good keywords to target, along with how many times each keyword is searched for and in which regions of the world. This tool isn’t so good for digging out those long-tail keywords but can give you a good idea on what people are searching for, in what volume and also offers related suggestions that you may want to consider.

Some go for Wordtracker, a paid keyword research tool that utilises search query results collected from Dogpile. This is a great tool for picking out those long-tail keywords and can help you find those gems that can bring in the real high quality traffic, although tends to be a little out of date as their database is only updated every 160 days.

Others look at what their competition is doing and base their list of keywords on what they are targeting – again, an effective way of generating an initial list of keyword terms to base your research on.

You get the idea – there are various other keyword research tools that are widely used. Some are free and some are paid services. But, with the explosion of social media there are plenty of tools that don’t initialy spring to mind when it comes to starting your keyword research…

How about Twitter? Not only can you use tools to find what people are talking about and how they phrase their references to a particular product, service or idea it can give you great ideas on hot topics to write about that relate to your industry that are likely to be Stumbled, Dugg, Retweeted and so on.

How about Facebook Lexicon? It lets you check terms that are being used across people’s walls and follows the trending of them, in a similar way to Google Trends (http://www.google.co.uk/trends).

There are many more tools that you could use for your keyword research that I haven’t mentioned – some that maybe do deserve the mention, others not so much. What tools do you use for your keyword research and have they been successful – or even accurate? Which do you find most helpful?

When researching keywords it’s quite easy to fall into the trap of finding high traffic keywords. For a new website this isn’t always feasible and is unlikely to give you the result you are after quickly.

When researching keywords for a particular niche long-tail keywords (keywords of 4 of more words in total) generally have a lower search volume and can easily be skipped when collating your list of potential terms, particularly by those less familiar with the ins and outs of SEO.
Although these long-tail keywords do offer little traffic they are often much more targeted and specific and can result in a higher conversion rate and you should really consider incorporating some of these into your campaign. Providing you select keyword terms that relate closely to the product or service being offered the potential client will see that you offer exactly what they are searching for and is more likely to convert that potential client into an actual client, as opposed to a general surfer.

As an example, a printing company may wish to target ‘printers’. Due to how competitive this term is there’s little chance of getting a top position without a mountain of cash to put into SEO and a few years to kill. A much better option, particularly for a new website, would be ‘full colour letterhead printers’ and potentially a region to get localised traffic.

Due to competition you are much more likely to get a position under ‘full colour letterhead printers’ than ‘printers’ and anyone searching for that term will see that you offer exactly what they searched for and is likely to stick around a little to check out your services.

Then it’s up to your website and sales copy to do the rest.
